Thinking about Aunt Joan and telling my daughter Lauren all about her, what a kind and sweet soul she was and how she always had words of encouragement for me when I was a kid, and actually throughout my whole life.
… telling her about our childhood, how close she was to my mom, and how close we all were, and all the fun times we had.
She was wise and smart! I remember many times we would engage in conversation about politics and ideas. Looking back I wish I could tell her how many times she was right.
Love Drew

I first met Joan in 1990 at the Onondaga County Medicaid department, then located on the 3rd floor of the County Office Building, as a newbie co-worker. Such a friendly person with a smiling face (most of the time)!. Amongst her many other responsibilities, all of us workers had to go to Joan for ANY necessary office supplies. So many of us got to see the at-work Joan. We imagined that outside of work, she had a mischievous side, especially as she occasionally shared photos of family and travels. We were both happy and sorrowful to see her retire but knew she had a loving family and it was time for her to enjoy the retirement life that she deserved and earned. God Bless You, Joan!!

As I think about Aunt Joan, memories come flooding back. She was just simply the kindest person!
When we were young Sunnybrook Dr was our second home. Always so much fun, family get togethers. Water balloon fights adults v. kids. Tag, hide and seek, playing in the crick, swinging on the tire, clam bakes. Adults playing cards, eating and drinking – ending in some group sing along of some Irish tune.
Funny just a few weeks ago I purchased several boxes of Girl Scout cookies and was thinking back to the days Cathy and I were in scouts. Aunt Joan was the Cookie mom. The front living room was FILLED to the brim with cases of girl scout cookies (this was before the pre order process they have today.) Aunt Joan had to dole out the boxes and would occasionally escort us on our door to door selling.
Boy did she love the heat. Always made me laugh, the hotter the better when she came out to AZ for a visit. She would just go about town, all on her own sometimes and make friends with EVERYONE… the cashiers at all the stores, the bus drivers, literally anyone she could talk to. Including those she met along the way on the jaunts to Las Vegas and Mexico. She had a blast.
I remember her telling me that she and my mom’s favorite time of year was the fall, when all of us kids would go back to school! Hahaha
My Dad always tells the story of how she showed up to RPI with my mom one time for a visit and how ALL the guys in the frat thought she was just gorgeous – I think he actually used the term she was a “Hot Ticket”!
Although its difficult to think she is gone, I do get a smile on my face thinking about her being with Uncle Harv and how happy my mom is to see her.
Thinking of you all.... Love Reen

I met Joan when I first began working for the County in the 1980s. Although I didn't work directly with her, she was a comfort and a pleasure to talk with and to be around, especially when I was the "new kid on the block" in the office. Her warm smile, her kind words and her cheery attitude were something I always remembered. She was indeed, an absolute sweetheart!! May God bless her beautiful soul, and may all those she loved know that her life hasn't ended, but merely changed.
