George A. Scobell, Jr., a man of courage and intelligence, passed away peacefully in Syracuse, NY. Born to George A. Scobell, Sr. and Helen (Jordan) Scobell on September 4, 1930, in New Rochelle, NY, George's life was a testament to his unwavering spirit and dedication to his family and country.

George's formative years were spent in the Syracuse area, where he developed a foundation of resilience and determination. He graduated from Solvay High School in 1948. Continuing his education, George proudly graduated from Syracuse University in 1952. During his time at SU, he was an active member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, the Naval Reserve, the Varsity Crew Team, and the Freshman Football Team. He carried on a proud family tradition as the second generation of four to row on the SU crew team, a legacy that included his father, his son Don, and his grandson Christopher.

After his time at Syracuse University, George entered the United States Marine Corps, dedicating 17 years of his life to serving his country in both active duty and as a reservist. His commitment to excellence was evident in his last assignment as Commanding Officer of the 29th Rifle Company, Buffalo Reserve Unit. George's military career was marked by the same courage and intelligence that would define his entire life.

Following his military service, George embarked on a successful career at Syracuse Supply Company, where he worked for 40 years. His exceptional skills in sales and management led him to the position of Vice President of the Construction Equipment Division. His colleagues respected him for his strategic thinking and his ability to lead with both integrity and foresight.

George's personal life was as rich and fulfilling as his professional one. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Nancy (Gilmore) Scobell, and father to his four children: George A. Scobell III, Don Scobell, Ken Scobell, and Joann Bill. His legacy continues through his seven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren, who brought him immense joy and pride.

A man who cherished the great outdoors, George loved spending vacations with his family in the Adirondacks and on the St. Lawrence River in Upstate New York. His passion for sailing in the Adirondacks and fishing on the St. Lawrence River was not just a pastime but a cherished tradition he passed down to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The summer home he purchased in Cape Vincent, NY, became a beloved family gathering spot, echoing with laughter and stories of the day's catch.

George A. Scobell, Jr. will be remembered for his unwavering courage, his sharp intellect, and his love for his family. His life was a tapestry of service, leadership, and familial devotion. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we celebrate the enduring impact he has left on his family, his community, and his country. George's legacy will continue to inspire and guide us, just as the steady current of a river shapes the landscape through which it flows.

There will be a celebration of George’s life on May 3rd, 2025, in Cape Vincent, NY.
