Obituary of Joan H. Neufang

Joan (Hewes) Neufang, a resident of Solvay, went home to the Lord on January 31, 2024. She was born in Lyons, New York in 1936 to parents Marcena B. and Amber Ethel (Jones) Hewes. The family resided in Westvale where she attended Fairmount and Solvay schools graduating in 1954. Joan received a B.A. degree in Music Education from Syracuse University in 1957. She married the love of her life, Robert Neufang, and shared a wonderful life together raising four sons.

Joan was a gifted piano and organ teacher and shared her love of music with family and many students. She worked for several years at Clark Music Company before entering private practice. Additionally, she was the organist at many local churches through the years and sang with the Liverpool Chorus. Her love of music was truly inspirational to a generation of young students.

Joan was an avid bowler and won the New York State Junior Championship in 1952. She loved to knit and crochet and would routinely give her work as Christmas and birthday gifts.

She was a communicant of both St. Michael’s Lutheran Church and Camillus Methodist Church. Joan was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and was a sixty year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She loved traveling and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Family and faith were always paramount in her life.

Joan will be missed by her family and friends. She was predeceased by her parents and several brothers and sisters-in-law.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Robert Neufang of Solvay; sons Robert Jr. (Susan) of Fabius; Dr. John of Ipswich England; Kurt (Linda) of Dauphin Island Alabama and Dr. Eric (Danielle) of Phoenix Arizona. She is also survived by grandchildren Dr. Nathan (Marianne); Benjamin (Dr. Lisa); Victoria and Robert III (Katherine) and great grandchildren Bryce and Evan along with two brothers-in-law and several nieces and nephews.
