Obituary of Joseph J. Slocum
Joseph Slocum, 98, longtime resident of Howlett Hill, passed away on Friday, surrounded by love at Francis House. Born in Syracuse, he graduated from Vocational High School and then enlisted in the US Army Signal Corp. He was assigned the duty of “Pigeoneer”, training and caring for messenger pigeons during WWII. He kept this passion for decades by actively racing homing pigeons in local clubs. Joe was an avid gardener and enjoyed growing tomatoes and sunflowers, picking weeds, and playing his harmonica. Joe worked his entire career on the railroad, starting at NY Central RR, PennCentral RR, and retiring from Conrail with 39 years of service.
Joe was predeceased by his wife, Wanda (Kadlubowski) in 2013.
He is survived by daughters, Joanne and Judy. Heartfelt gratitude is expressed to his long term caregivers, Liz and Sarah, whose compassionate care allowed him to live happily at his homestead in Howlett Hill. Thanks to all the neighbors for their watchful eye and helping hand throughout the years. Special thanks to Dr. Henry Schoeneck for all of his house visits and attentive care; and Howlett Hill Fire Dept for their multiple visits and dignified care for one of their “elders”; and blessings to Francis House for surrounding him with love during his final days.
Calling hours will be 4 to 7 pm Wednesday, August 3 at Tindall Funeral Home, 1921 W Genesee St, Syracuse, NY 13204.
In lieu of flowers….plant some, and “grow your own” in his honor.
A Celebration of Life for Joe will be scheduled later this summer at Willowdale Bend Farm and Wildlife Santuary.
