Mr. Garn was my 6th grade home room and math teacher. It was the year after my mom died and I was a bit lost. He was one of the first teachers to arrive and I know he just wanted to read his paper and drink his coffee but most mornings I was there waiting on the doorstep before he got there and he let me in and sometimes I scampered between the desks, read a book and I am sure annoyed the daylights out of him but he never let on. I often stayed late too and if the weather was terrible (back when you could do this), he would see me starting the mile or long to walk home and he would pull up in his tiny orange car (I think it was a Volkswagen rabbit) and say get in and drive me home. He was at least 6’3” I think and somehow he fit in it.
He was devoted to his wife and son who he talked about often in class. He was no softy in a sense. If I was chatty, I still got to sit in the special desk in the front. I didn’t get any sort of special treatment except for his acceptance and understanding of my presence.
I went back to his classroom at least a couple of times a year to say hi all of the way through my senior year. He would look at me over his glasses and say oh, geez look who is here gruffly but I knew he was glad to see me (more than at 6:00 am many years ago).
I wish that I had known he worked at the fair or knew how to contact to say thanks again.
I am very grateful for him and he made a huge difference in my life.

Mr Garn was such a positive influence during my time at Bolivar Elementary unfortunately I never took the opportunity to let him know what a blessing he was. Thank you for sharing him with us. His influence carried so many of us positively through our lives.

Mr Garn was one of my favorite teachers, he taught my 6th grade math and language arts classes. He was a wonderful teacher. My family showed cows at the State Fair and he would always come by for a visit. He gave me a book of virtues on my HS graduation, hopefully I can pass along to my children many of those traits I was fortunate to learn from him. My condolences to his family, he had a very positive influence in my life! Julie Kelsey Wittman
