Obituary of Philomena M. Malys

Please share a memory of Philomena to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Philomena (Testa) Malys, 97, passed away peacefully on Saturday after a brief illness. We can all be certain that Heaven is a better place knowing that Phylis is with her friends and family, baking for those who have gone before her. Her famous biscotti, lemon cookies or a host of other delicious baked goods and food she generously shared with everyone. Phylis’ first love was her family, devoting her time and caring spirit to their happiness and well-being. Her passion for food brought us all closer together, especially around her kitchen table.

Phylis was born in Syracuse on November 30, 1923. She was the daughter of Joseph and Susie (DeSantis) Testa. She lived in Solvay throughout her long and marvelous life. Phylis attended Vocational High School and graduated with excellence. She worked at Syracuse Supply from 1941 to 1951 as a secretary in the Engineering Department. She then worked as a bookkeeper at Syracuse Merchandisers and was always admired for her impeccable work ethic. She married Chester S. Malys on October 23rd, 1948, and they were married for 66 years.

She will be remembered as a tireless volunteer for the Piercefield Women’s Club, Solvay Seniors, and the Food Pantry of the Basilica of Sacred Heart. She was also a member of the Legion of Mary at Our Lady of Pompeii and the Altar Rosary Society at the Basilica of Sacred Heart. Phylis travelled extensively with Chet and together they also enjoyed golf at Tuscarora Country Club. She was always there to help people in need, and she was one of the strongest and selfless women we were privileged to know and love. She will dearly be missed by all who knew her.

She was predeceased by two grandchildren, Elizabeth Malys and Richard Joseph (RJ) Malys; her son, Richard Joseph Malys; daughter, Mary Sue Waisman and her beloved husband, Chester S. (Chet) Malys; her sisters and lifelong friends, Grace M. Guild and Genevieve Bulus.

Survivors: her son-in-law, David M. Waisman; her grandchildren, Meredith Grace and Phillip David of Nova Scotia, Canada; and her daughter-in-law, Christine Malys of Camillus.

Services: 9:30am Wednesday October 13, at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Mausoleum, DeWitt.
