I am saddened to her about Ursula’s passing. I met her while I was caring for her as a nurse and we became friends. I loved hearing her stories of her home in Germany and about her daughters and grandchildren. We would go out for lunch and both she and I valued the friendship we had made. My sincerest condolences to Helga, Tina and Maria whom I have never met but whom I feel like I know from Ursula’s stories.

Dear Helga, Tina and Maria,
It has taken me a while to process the fact that Ursula has passed. I did not find out until over two weeks later, as I left a note inside her door after being alarmed when she didn’t answer the phone. I had been out of state visiting my very pregnant daughter. Your mom always inquired about my children and grandchildren, before she so proudly spoke of her daughters and families. Then we might venture into novels, travel, politics, current world news etc. We would visit for hours! Her life inspired me and her sharp mind and sense of humor led to so many heartfelt discussions. How fortunate I was to meet her in Wegmans later in life and we immediately trusted each other and moved forward in a friendship I will cherish always! Thank God I have a selfie of the two of us from earlier this year and a coaster that she embroidered and is on my nightstand. I loved Ursula and miss her terribly.

I met Ursula soon after I moved to Lafayette in 2018, along with my wife Melinda. I thoroughly enjoyed talking to her about her experiences regarding her life in Ww2 Germany, surviving the war, subsequent Soviet occupation and then finally coming to America. I regarded her as a personal witness to history which is a subject I myself enjoy very much. I admire people like Ursula, who pick up and leave all that is familiar, move to a foreign country with very little in their pockets and start a new life, and do it all in a second language. I have met very few Americans who would have the guts to do that. I also found her old school manners very charming. She was a genuinely nice lady. I miss her.

Ursula will be missed greatly—and forever remembered—as a very kind, thoughtful, sweet, and generous person. I loved talking with her over the phone and appreciated our conversations. As she used to say, “... into God’s hands.” With deepest sympathy, Jana
