Charles P. Sopp May 4, 2011 Charles Philip Sopp, 89, of Syracuse, passed away on Wednesday, after a brave battle with Alzheimer's. He was born in Cortland and attended Cortland High School and then business school in Syracuse. He served in the US Army during WWII. Upon his return, he worked as a supervisor in the trucking industry and later opened his own business, Charles Liquors and Wines in the Westvale Shopping Center for 25 years. In his sixties he was the director of the Onondaga County Solid Waste Authority, and in his seventies, worked for the DA's office. He was a former Master of the Masons, he belonged to Kiwanis, and he volunteered for Toys for Tots. He was very active at St. Elias Orthodox Church where he was president of the board of trustees and choir director. He loved golfing, and tennis. He was a great role model as a loving father and grandfather. He is predeceased by his loving wife, Rose; his parents, Shaheen and Mary Sopp; his brother, Don Sopp; and his sisters, Jen Saiffe, Bea Eadi, and Linda Fabrezio. Survivors: his three children Michele Sopp (Jim) Wingrave, Dr. Shane (Christine) Sopp, and Steve Sopp, along with ten grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers William Sopp and Ernest Sopp and sister, Betty Foote, along with many nieces and nephews. Services: Calling hours are 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at St. Elias Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church, 4988 Onondaga Rd., Syracuse. The funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Elias Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church. Burial will follow with military honors in Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Saint Elias Building Fund, 4988 Onondaga Road, Syracuse, New York 13215.
