Grief - What is Normal?

If you are dealing with the death of a loved one for the very first time and are wondering whether you grief is normal, read on... When it comes to healing, people deal with grief in different ways. Some people are unable to control their emotions while others find that they are unable to stop their tears. We at Tindall Funeral Home, have seen that grief takes various forms and there really is no concept of what’s "normal" and what isn’t.

Every person is unique, their personality is different and so are their situations and circumstances. All these aspects have a very important role to play when it comes to how grief manifests itself in different individuals. Let’s take a look at what could be considered normal in grief:

Normal Physical Symptoms Of Grief Could Include:

  • Dry mouth and skin
  • Sleeplessness
  • Loss of appetite or over-eating
  • The area near your heart can hurt
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Forgetfulness
  • Feeling confused
  • Other

Normal Emotional Symptoms Of Grief Could Include:

  • Feeling that everything is unreal
  • You feel very distant from others
  • Loss of meaning in your life
  • Frustration and sometimes anger because there was nothing you could do to prevent the death
  • Many people also feel a certain numbness and shock and sometimes guilt as well.
  • Some go through depression while others feel relief if their loved one has suffered from a serious illness before their demise.

While all of these are normal in grief, it’s important to discuss your feeling with someone close to you or you can consult a grief counselor as well. This will provide some solace and peace.
