Funeral Etiquette 101

Funerals are solemn affairs full of grieving individuals. This means people are sensitive and can be easily offended, which is why it’s important for attendees to follow funeral etiquette carefully. You don’t want to cause more pain to people who are already suffering. At Tindall Funeral Home, we recommend that you keep these factors in mind while attending a funeral.

1. Choose the Right Clothes

Don’t wear something bright or cheerful for a funeral. Stick to wearing black clothes with no bold patterns. Make sure all clothing is work-appropriate and modest. Women should keep their makeup simple and clean. Avoid casual clothes like jeans or t-shirts and make sure all attending children are also dressed appropriately.

2. Arrive Early

It’s a good idea to arrive at a funeral at least 15 to 20 minutes before the scheduled time. Make sure you take traffic conditions and travel time into account before leaving your home. This ensures you don’t arrive at the last moment or in the middle of the funeral.

3. Stay at the Back

If you are unavoidably late, make sure your arrival doesn’t cause too much disruption. Sit at the back or stand just outside the entrance. Don’t attempt to find a seat at the front or in a filled row because that will draw attention and appear disrespectful.

4. Keep Your Phone on Silent

Switch off your phone or keep it on silent to ensure calls or messages don’t disrupt the funeral. Don’t attend to any calls or reply to any messages during the service because that will appear disrespectful. It’s a good idea to keep your phone in your pocket or purse and not look at the screen until the funeral is over.
